I’ve always watched as fans of Red and Blue got yet another spinoff or remake aimed at them (and eventually their kids) that didn’t connect with me any more than any other game in the franchise. I was expected to be in awe of a past I didn’t know. I was told to reminisce over 8-bit art styles and music from games I’d never touched. Growing up playing Nintendo games in the 2000s and 2010s, I played in the shadows of nostalgia. Sure, other games have been remade, but no region aside from Kanto has seen this kind of love.

Not because the series has taken a wild, creative new direction, or even because a new generation’s out once more, but because the Pokémon Company has learned to capitalize on (or, depending on how you feel about it, weaponize) the nostalgia of fans beyond those who loved the original 151. We’re on the cusp of a new era of Pokémon. I’ve heard fans of Gen 1 do this for most of my life, though, so just hear me out. I can already feel your eyes rolling as I talk about nostalgia, my age and how far I’ve come in a review of a remake-especially a review for a remake of my first Pokémon game. The sprite work is phenomenal, and really helps the Pokemon feel alive. The post-game is basically just checking out a previously unavailable portion of the region.

There's a lot to explore here, and I love it. There's quite a few interesting dungeons and secrets scattered about the region, even places you might initially miss on your first playthrough. I'd rather not spoil it for those who somehow haven't played it by now, but the climax is amazing. The story is probably the best in the series to date, and it all comes to a head when you reach the Pokemon League. Some may see that as a downside but I like to see what's new when it comes to Pokemon games. I like the "soft-reset" idea, with 150 new Pokemon and none of the old ones available until post-game. Certain Pokémon appear more frequently during different seasons, and players can only access some areas during a specific season. Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version also mark the first time in a Pokémon video game that the seasons will change in the game world. Additionally, the two games feature different areas for the first time in the series, with the game world of Pokémon Black Version featuring a unique metropolitan area called Black City, and a lush, green area named White Forest only found in Pokémon White Version. For example, the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram can only be caught in Pokémon Black Version, while the Legendary Pokémon Zekrom can only be caught in Pokémon White Version. For example, the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram can Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version feature new Pokémon that players can catch, train and battle as they progress through the game, and some Pokémon can only be caught in one version of the game.
